INDvsPAK Tyeb Tahir’s 108-run knock was followed by a strong performance from the bowlers led by left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem (three wickets) as Pakistan A defeated India A by 128 runs in the final of the Emerging Asia Cup one-day tournament to defend their title.
When the match got underway yesterday, it seemed like the Champions Trophy 2017 final was happening all over again. That day was also a Sunday when India won the toss and put Pakistan to bat and then the game got out of hand. In that match also, Pakistan had put more than 300 runs on the score board. Even on social media, the fans considered both these matches to be exactly the same.

- Bowling first after winning the toss
India won the toss and chose to bowl first against Pakistan. This mistake cost India dearly. The same happened in the Champions Trophy final as well. Captain Virat Kohli won the toss and invited the then Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed to bat.
Batting first, defending champions Pakistan A bundled out the Indian innings for 224 in 40 overs after posting 352 for eight. For India A, opener Abhishek Sharma scored 61 off 51 balls with the help of five fours and a six. Sai Sudarshan (29 off 28 balls) and skipper Yash Dhull (39 off 41 balls) failed to convert good starts into big innings.
For Pakistan A, Sufiyan took three wickets for 66 runs in 10 overs, including the wickets of Abhishek and Dhull. For the team, Arshad Iqbal, Mehran Mumtaz and Mohammad Wasim took two wickets each while Mubasir Khan took one wicket.
For Pakistan A, Tahir hit 12 fours and four sixes in his 71-ball knock. He shared a 126-run partnership with Mubasir Khan (35 off 47 balls) for the sixth wicket to take the team’s score past 300.
- Century partnership for the first wicket
Sent into bat, Saim Ayub (59 off 51 balls) and Sahibzada Farhan (65 off 62 balls) put on a 121-run partnership to give Pakistan a strong start. Both took an aggressive approach from the first over of the innings and scored runs easily against the Indian bowlers. This partnership was broken by Manav Suthar in the 18th over when Ayub was caught behind by Jurel. Ayub hit seven fours and two sixes in his innings.
- The wicketkeeper took the catch and the ball was a no ball.
Initially, the Indian team had a great chance to dismiss Saim but this ball turned out to be a no ball. On Rana’s ball, Saim got up high by taking the edge of the bat. Wicketkeeper Jurel caught the ball but the umpire signaled no ball.
Significantly, the same happened in the final of Champions Trophy 2017 when Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman was caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni off Bumrah’s bowling. But after the no-ball of this ball, he had adopted an aggressive stance.

Farhan, who hit four fours and as many sixes in his innings, was run out by a brilliant throw from skipper Dhull. Omar Yousuf (35 off 35 balls) and Tahir propelled the innings without slowing down. Riyan then brought India back into the match by dismissing Yousuf and Qasim Akram (0) in successive balls. Nishant trapped skipper Mohammad Haris (two runs) lbw to reduce Pakistan’s score from 183 for two to 187 for five.
- century by a pakistani batsman
Tahir got good support from Mubasir after this. Where Mubasir was playing cautiously, Tahir was batting aggressively from the other end. This partnership was broken by fast bowler Rajvardhan Hungergekar in the 45th over by dismissing Tahir. He then removed Mubasir in his next over as well. In the last over, Wasim scored an unbeaten 17 off 10 balls to take the team’s score to 350. For India, Hungergekar and Riyan took two wickets each, while Harshit, Suthar and Sindhu took one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Sudarshan and Abhishek, who were in good rhythm, got India off to a good start. Both of them batting aggressively completed the team’s half-century in six overs. Sudarshan, who scored an unbeaten century in the group stage against Pakistan, was dismissed by Arshad in the ninth over to break the 64-run partnership for the first wicket.
After this wicket, the Indian team’s runs were restricted and in the 13th over, Nikin Jose (11 runs in 15 balls) was caught out by the umpire’s poor decision, he believed that the ball had hit his waist but due to the noise, the umpire raised his finger.
- Indian batting collapsed
Abhishek and skipper Yash Dhull batted smartly to bring up the team’s century in the 16th over. In the same over, Abhishek completed his half-century by taking a single off the ball of Sufiyan Mukim. Dhull reduced the pressure against this bowler with two fours in the 18th over. Abhishek got out in the 20th over after hitting a six. He hit five fours and a six in his 51-ball innings.
The pressure of reducing the required run-rate was getting to the Indian batsmen and the team lost the wickets of Nishant Sindhu (10 runs) and Dhull in the space of two runs in the 25th and 26th overs. Mumtaz removed Dhruv Jurel (9 off 12 balls) and Riyan Parag (24 off 17 balls) to end India’s hopes.
- The margin of defeat was more than 100 runs
Harshit Rana (14) hit two sixes in his nine-ball innings to increase the excitement a bit but became Sufiyan’s third victim, leaving the team at 194 for eight in the 32nd over. The last two wickets added 46 runs to prolong Pakistan’s wait for victory.
India got a big defeat of 128 runs in this match. In the 2017 Champions Trophy final too, India had to face a massive 180-run defeat. And Team India could not play even the whole over.
