Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been suspended for the next two international matches after two separate breaches of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Code of Conduct. The ICC announced this on Tuesday.

Harmanpreet has been suspended for an incident that took place during the third ODI between India and Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday. The first incident happened when Harmanpreet expressed her frustration by hitting the wickets with her bat after being given out caught in the slips off spinner Nahida Akhtar. He should also say a few words to the umpire before returning to the pavilion.

Harmanpreet was fined 50 percent of her match fee for a second-level code of conduct offense and three demerit points were added to her disciplinary record.

The second incident happened when Harmanpreet came down heavily on ‘poor umpiring’ at the presentation ceremony after the match was tied. Harmanpreet was fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level-1 offense relating to “public criticism in relation to an incident in an international match”.

Harmanpreet pleaded guilty and agreed to the sanctions proposed by ICC match referee Akhtar Ahmed. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing and the penalty was implemented immediately.

Converting these four demerit points into two suspension points, Harmanpreet was suspended from two limited overs matches. India’s next campaign is the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China. India has got a direct place in the quarter-finals on the basis of ICC rankings, so Harmanpreet will not be able to participate in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.(agency)
