Bengaluru: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has banned the entry of bikes, autos, tractors, non-motorised vehicles and multi-axle hydraulic vehicles from using the main carriageway of the Bengaluru-Mysore Expressway, from August 1. NHAI has built a 118 km long access controlled expressway from Panchmukhi Temple near Kengeri in Bengaluru to Manipal Hospital Junction in Mysore. The highway has been developed as a high-speed corridor, with a maximum speed limit for vehicles ranging from 80 kmph to 100 kmph.

An NHAI notification stated that the movement of speeding vehicles may endanger the safety of certain categories of comparatively slow moving vehicles like bikes, autos, tractors, non-motorised vehicles and others. Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred under section 35 of the “Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act 2002”, the order has been issued to ban six categories of vehicles namely motor cycles (including scooters), three wheelers (including e-carts and e-rickshaws), non-motorised vehicles, tractors with or without trailer, multi-axle hydraulic trailer vehicles and quadri-cycles.

NHAI appealed to the people

An NHAI official said, “We urge people using autos, bikes and other restricted vehicles not to use the main carriageway. They can use the service road along the expressway. We are going to create awareness on this by putting up sign boards.”

Since its opening, more than 100 people have lost their lives in over 300 road accidents on the expressway. Frequent fatal accidents have forced authorities to implement road safety measures, including imposing fines on overspeeding and violating traffic rules.
