INDvsBAN Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur may be ruled out of the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Asian Games after her on-field unruly behavior during the third ODI against Bangladesh and sharp criticism of the umpires during her presentation.
According to a report published by Cricbuzz on Monday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is about to give Harmanpreet four demerit points, due to which he will be banned for two limited overs matches.
According to the ICC Code of Conduct rules, “When a player receives four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, a ban (on the player) is converted into suspension points. Two suspension points can result in a ban for one Test or two ODIs or two T20 Internationals.”
The Indian women’s team will next play in the Asian Games. Based on the ICC rankings, the Indian team has got a direct entry into the quarterfinals. Harmanpreet could be out of the quarterfinals and semi-finals after getting four demerit points. This means that if India travel to the final, Harmanpreet will directly take the field in the title match.
It is worth mentioning that in the match played at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur, Harmanpreet had hit the wickets with his bat and had a heated argument with the umpire while returning to the pavilion. The match eventually ended in a tie and the three-match series ended in a 1–1 draw.
Harmanpreet said after the match that she would keep in mind on the next tour to Bangladesh that they would have to face “this kind of umpiring” apart from the hosts. According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, Harmanpreet will get three demerit points for his behavior on the field, while he will get one demerit point for criticizing the umpires in the presentation.
The match officials have submitted their reports to the ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Once the sanctions are announced, Harmanpreet has the right to appeal, in which case the ICC match referee will hear the matter.(agency)
